Lower Kaban Lake is the oldest water body in Kazan, known since the 16th century. In pre-revolutionary times a trade route passed here, and fishing settlements lined the shores. The name "Kaban" is linked to legends of wild boars that lived in the surrounding thickets.
In the 20th century the water area suffered greatly from industrial discharge and urban development. By the early 2000s the lake was in a critical state: the bottom was covered with silt and the water failed to meet sanitary standards.
Development of the ecological rehabilitation project. Removal of silt from the bottom, reinforcement of the banks.
Construction of promenade infrastructure, installation of water treatment and aeration systems.
Grand opening of the embankment. The space became Russia's first project of this scale for improving a water area.
Additional landscaping, launch of floating gardens, creation of the ecological trail.
New lighting systems, extension of cycle lanes, improvement of the eastern part.
After rehabilitation, populations of aquatic plants and fish recovered in the lake. Reeds, cattails and water lilies have returned to the shallows. Ducks and gulls nest along the shores, and herons are occasionally spotted.
The floating gardens act as a natural biofilter: plant roots absorb excess nutrients and purify the water without chemicals.
